Core Web Vitals Explained for Website Owners

Google keeps a report card on your website. It's called Core Web Vitals, and you don't need to write a line of code to understand it. This is Core Web Vitals explained for website owners: three numbers, what they actually measure, and what to do when they're red.

Why care? Because these scores feed into rankings, and because they describe the exact experience your customers have on a phone in Chabahil on 4G. Bad vitals means people leave before your page loads. Good vitals means they stay. It's that direct.

The three Core Web Vitals in plain language

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) asks: how long until the main thing on the page shows up? Usually that's your hero image or headline. Google wants this under 2.5 seconds. Over 4 seconds is a fail.

INP (Interaction to Next Paint) asks: when someone taps a button or opens your menu, how fast does the page react? Under 200 milliseconds feels instant. Over 500 feels broken, like a lift button that ignores you.

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) asks: does the page jump around while loading? You've felt this: you go to tap "Menu" and an ad loads above it, so you tap "Call" instead. Google wants a score under 0.1, which roughly means "nothing visibly jumps".

How to check your scores in two minutes, free

Go to PageSpeed Insights (search the name, it's Google's own free tool), paste your website address, and wait. You'll get a mobile score and a desktop score. Look at mobile first; that's what Google ranks you on. Green is passing, orange needs work, red is costing you customers today. No login, no payment, no developer required.

Check the "real user data" section at the top if it appears. That's measurements from actual visitors, which matters more than the lab test below it. The lab test simulates one visit from one simulated device; the real data is 28 days of your actual customers on their actual phones. When the two disagree, trust the real data. A site can score 95 in the lab and still feel slow to someone on a crowded Ncell cell tower at 6 pm, and Google knows it.

Make this a habit, not a one-off. Check quarterly, and always after installing a new plugin, theme or chat widget, because those are what quietly push a green site into orange.

What usually breaks each score

Slow LCP is almost always giant images or slow hosting. A 3 MB photo straight off a phone camera can hold a page hostage for five seconds on mobile data. Cheap overcrowded shared hosting adds another second or two before anything even starts.

Bad INP usually means too much JavaScript: page builders stacked with plugins, chat widgets, popups and trackers all fighting for the phone's processor. Mid-range Android phones, which is most of Nepal, feel this worst.

Bad CLS comes from images without reserved space, late-loading banners, and fonts that swap after the text appears. All fixable in an afternoon by someone who knows where to look.

Realistic targets for a business site

You don't need a perfect 100. Chasing it wastes money. A practical target for a Nepali business site: mobile score above 80, all three vitals green, page loading in under 3 seconds on 4G. That beats the majority of your competitors, whose sites we test regularly and which routinely score in the 30s and 40s.

How WebsNP builds for green vitals from day one

Every site we deliver is built and then tested against Core Web Vitals before handover: WebP images sized to their containers, minimal scripts, fonts loaded properly, and a year of free hosting on our own NVMe servers so the foundation is fast too. Full on-page SEO is included in every package, and vitals are part of that, not an upsell. If your current site is scoring red, send us the URL. We'll tell you honestly whether it needs a tune-up or a rebuild, with a fixed quote within 24 hours either way.
