Live Chat on Your Website: Worth It, and Which Kind?

Every second client asks us for it. "Can we have that chat bubble in the corner, like the big sites?" Sure we can. It takes ten minutes to install. But is live chat on your website actually worth it for your business? Sometimes yes, genuinely. Sometimes it is a decoration that quietly tells visitors nobody is home. The difference is not the software. It is whether a human answers, and how fast.

What live chat actually does for sales

The case for chat is timing. A visitor comparing your trekking package with two competitors has a question right now: "Is the permit included?" If they can ask and get an answer in under a minute, you often win the sale on the spot. Industry studies regularly show visitors who chat convert at several times the rate of those who do not, and our own client data agrees in direction if not always in size. Chat also captures the hesitant ones: people too shy to call, too impatient for email.

The case against is just as real. An unanswered chat is a broken promise displayed on every page. "We reply instantly", says the bubble. Four hours later, silence. That visitor leaves with a worse impression than if the widget never existed.

The three kinds of chat, honestly compared

  • Human live chat widgets. Tools like Tawk.to (free), Crisp or Tidio put a bubble on the site and an app on your staff's phone. Best conversion, highest discipline required. If nobody owns the inbox, do not install it.
  • Messenger, WhatsApp or Viber chat plugins. The chat lands in apps your team already checks obsessively. For most Nepali SMEs this is the sweet spot: no new inbox, no new habit, and the customer keeps a copy of the conversation. The trade-off is fewer sales features and no neat "who is on which page" view.
  • Chatbots and AI assistants. Good at 2 am, good at "what are your hours" questions, genuinely useful for hotels and clinics with repetitive FAQs. But a bot that fakes being human and then fails annoys people badly. Use bots to answer the boring 60 percent and hand off the rest to a person, with honesty about which is which.

The staffing question nobody budgets for

Software is the cheap part. Tawk.to costs nothing; even paid tools run USD 15 to 30 a month. The real cost is attention. Someone must own chat during business hours, with a target of answering inside two minutes. In a five-person company that is usually whoever handles Viber enquiries anyway, which is why the plugin route works so well here. Outside business hours, switch the widget to a message form honestly labelled "we reply by 10 am", not a fake "online" light.

Write down three canned answers before launch day: your price question, your location question, your "do you deliver" question. Eighty percent of chats will be one of those three, and a saved reply turns a two-minute answer into a ten-second one. The businesses that thrive with chat are not the ones with the best software. They are the ones that made answering somebody's actual job.

When to skip live chat entirely

Skip it if you are a one-person business already drowning in Viber messages: adding a second inbox will make you slower everywhere. Skip the human widget if your enquiries are fewer than five a day; a prominent WhatsApp button does the same job with less machinery. And skip AI bots if your service is high-trust and high-ticket, like legal work or medical care, where a canned answer can do real damage. There is no shame in a fast phone number and a same-day email.

Our recommendation for most Nepali businesses

Start with what your customers already use: WhatsApp and Viber buttons wired into the site, answered by the humans who already answer them. If enquiry volume grows past what personal phones can manage, add a proper widget like Tawk.to with named staff and office-hours rules, and only then consider a bot for after-hours FAQs. WebsNP builds chat into websites at no extra charge on any package, and we will tell you plainly which kind fits your team rather than selling you the fanciest one. A website delivered in 2 to 7 days with the right chat setup beats a fancy bot nobody maintains, every single time.
