Real Reseller Capacity: How Many Clients Fit Before Things Get Slow

"How many sites can I host?" is the wrong question with a tempting wrong answer (divide disk by average site size). Real capacity is whichever of four limits you hit first, and disk is rarely it. Here is the full picture with the math.

Limit 1: Disk (the obvious one)

A typical small-business WordPress site: 1 to 3 GB including email. A 100 GB plan naively fits 40 such sites. But sites grow, mailboxes hoard, and you need headroom, so plan around 60 to 70 percent allocation: 25 to 30 comfortable clients on 100 GB. More if your niche is tiny brochure sites, fewer if photographers.

Limit 2: Inodes (the sneaky one)

Every file and folder is one inode, and reseller plans cap them (commonly 250k to 500k). A fresh WordPress install: about 25,000 inodes. Add a page builder, WooCommerce and image variants: 60,000+ easily. One client with years of unmanaged image uploads can hold 150,000 inodes in 8 GB of disk. Twenty realistic WordPress clients can exhaust an inode cap long before the disk fills. Check current usage in cPanel's statistics column, and make cache-folder cleanup part of your maintenance routine, since caches are inode factories.

Limit 3: CPU and concurrent processes (the felt one)

Shared platforms cap CPU seconds and simultaneous PHP processes per account. Ninety percent of small sites idle all day; the problem is the one WooCommerce store running a flash sale or the site with an abusive crawler hitting it. Capacity rule: count "heavy" clients (ecommerce, membership sites, anything with logged-in users) as three to five normal ones, and cap how many you place on one reseller plan. When a second plan becomes cheaper than the complaints, split heavy clients onto it.

Limit 4: Email volume

Hundreds of mailboxes across clients means storage (counted in disk) plus send-rate limits per hour. One newsletter-happy client can consume the hour's quota and delay everyone's invoices. Watch for it; route bulk senders to proper newsletter tools.

Worked example

Define it now: at 70 percent of whichever limit you approach first, buy the next tier or a second plan. Upgrades cost a fraction of one lost client, and the reseller who expands early never has to explain a slow Tuesday to thirty people at once.
