- URLs are the street addresses of your website.
- Messy ones confuse Google and scare humans.
- Here is how to get them right the first time.
Website URL Structure: SEO Best Practices for Business Sites
Look at your browser's address bar right now. That string of text is doing SEO work, good or bad, on every page of your site. Website URL structure is one of those things nobody thinks about until it's wrong, and then it's expensive to fix, because changing addresses later means redirects, lost links and a temporary rankings wobble. Get it right at design time and never think about it again.
The good news: the best practices fit on one page. This one.
What a good URL looks like
Compare two addresses for the same page. First: yoursite.com/index.php?page_id=847&cat=3. Second: yoursite.com/services/web-design. One of these tells Google and humans exactly what the page is. The other tells them you bought a website in 2011.
Good URLs are short, lowercase, use hyphens between words, and contain the page's main keyword because they describe the page honestly. Three to five words in the final segment is plenty. "yoursite.com/trekking/everest-base-camp" beats "yoursite.com/our-amazing-himalayan-adventure-packages-page-2" every single time.
Structure should mirror your business
URLs come in levels, and the levels should map to how your offerings group. A folder per category, a page per service: /hosting/shared, /hosting/reseller, /website-design-in-nepal. This helps Google understand which pages belong together, lets breadcrumbs generate cleanly, and means you can measure whole sections in analytics with one filter.
Keep it shallow though. Two levels covers almost any business site. If a page sits at /services/digital/marketing/social/facebook, four folders deep, both users and crawlers need a sherpa to find it.
The rules that save you later
Lowercase always: /Contact and /contact can be treated as different pages, which splits your ranking signal. Hyphens, never underscores or spaces. No dates in page URLs unless the content is genuinely dated news, because /2022/pricing looks stale in 2026 even after you update it. No stop-word stuffing: drop "the", "and", "of" where the URL stays readable without them. And skip Devanagari or special characters in URLs; they turn into unreadable percent-encoded soup when shared on Viber or WhatsApp, which is where half of Nepal shares links.

See Website Design PackagesPermanence is the whole point
A URL is a promise. Every link from another site, every WhatsApp share, every Google ranking attaches to that exact address. Change it casually and everything pointing at the old address hits a 404, and the authority the page earned evaporates. So choose addresses you can keep for ten years: name pages after what they are, not this year's campaign slogan. When a URL genuinely must change, a 301 redirect from old to new preserves most of the value, but the best redirect is the one you never needed.
Planned before design, like plumbing
At WebsNP, the URL map is written before any design work starts: every page, its address, its keyword, agreed in the proposal stage. It takes an hour and prevents years of mess. Clean permalink setup, lowercase enforcement, and redirects for any old addresses you're carrying from a previous site are all part of the full on-page SEO included in every package. Fixed-price quote within 24 hours, most sites delivered in 2 to 7 days, and every page launches at the address it will still hold in 2036. Boring? Completely. Profitable? Also completely.
