Why Websites Break: The Anatomy of "The Site Is Down"

The message usually arrives on Viber, around 9 in the morning. "Sir, the website is not opening." No error code. No screenshot. Just panic. If you own a website long enough, you'll get this message at least once, so it's worth understanding why websites break in the first place. Cause 1: Something expired

This is the boring champion of website breakage. Domains expire. Hosting plans expire. SSL certificates expire. The renewal email went to an old Yahoo address belonging to a staff member who left in 2023, and nobody paid the invoice. Your website didn't crash. It was simply switched off, politely, by a billing system.

The tell: the site shows a parking page, a "suspended" notice, or a browser security warning instead of your content. The fix is payment, not programming. Prevention costs nothing: auto-renew on, billing email pointed at an inbox the owner actually reads.

Cause 2: An update went wrong

WordPress core, themes and plugins update constantly. Most updates are harmless. Occasionally one plugin update conflicts with another, or with your PHP version, and the site white-screens. We once watched a Kathmandu restaurant site die on a Saturday because a slider plugin auto-updated and disagreed with the theme it had lived beside for three years.

How to diagnose in five minutes

• Check whether it's down for everyone or just your NTC or Ncell connection (use a "down for everyone" checker).
• Read the error. "Suspended" means billing. "Not secure" means SSL. A blank page means code.
• Check your domain expiry date with a WHOIS lookup. Takes 30 seconds.
• Ask your host. A good one answers fast.
• If it's code, restore last night's backup first, investigate second.
