WooCommerce vs Shopify for Nepal Ecommerce: The Decision That Actually Matters

If you're planning an online store here, the WooCommerce vs Shopify question comes up in the first meeting, every time. Worldwide, Shopify is the easy recommendation. In Nepal, the answer flips, and it flips because of three unglamorous things: payment gateways, monthly fees in dollars, and cash on delivery.

The payment gateway problem nobody at Shopify will solve for you

Shopify Payments doesn't operate in Nepal. No Stripe either. What's left is a handful of third-party gateways, none of which are eSewa or Khalti. Read that again, because it's the whole ballgame: the two wallets your customers actually use are not properly supported. Some stores limp along with manual payment instructions ("send to this eSewa number and screenshot it"), which works about as well as it sounds during a Tihar sale rush.

WooCommerce, being WordPress, has real eSewa and Khalti plugins. Customer pays in the wallet app, order confirms automatically, you see it in the dashboard. Card payments for international buyers can ride alongside through PayPal or a local bank gateway. This is not a small difference. It's the difference between an online store and an online brochure.

Fees: rupees once vs dollars forever

Shopify's basic plan is USD 29 a month before apps, and most real stores need USD 20 to 50 of apps on top. Call it NPR 8,000 to 13,000 monthly, paid by international card, forever, plus transaction fees. Over three years that's easily NPR 300,000 before you've sold anything.

A WooCommerce store built by WebsNP typically costs NPR 60,000 to 150,000 once, depending on catalogue size and features, then a few thousand rupees a year for hosting and domain. First year of both is free with our packages, along with SSL, daily backups and on-page SEO. Gateway fees still apply (eSewa and Khalti take roughly 2 to 3 percent per transaction), but those hit you either way.

The COD reality check

Here's what Daraz figured out long ago: most Nepali ecommerce is still cash on delivery. Sixty to eighty percent of orders for a typical new store. Your platform must treat COD as a first-class citizen, with order verification by phone or Viber, delivery notes, and easy marking of failed deliveries (they happen, a lot). WooCommerce handles COD natively and we extend it with verification workflows. Shopify supports COD too, to be fair, but you're paying dollar-a-month software prices to run what is mostly a cash operation.

Delivery is the other half of that reality. Nepali stores live and die on their courier relationships: Pathao Parcel and local logistics firms inside the Valley, bus counters and regional couriers beyond it. None of these have polished Shopify apps, so either platform ends up managing dispatch semi-manually. On WooCommerce we build simple dispatch screens that print labels, track which rider took which orders, and flag deliveries unconfirmed after three days. Unfashionable features. They're also the ones store owners thank us for six months later, because a lost COD parcel is pure loss: the product, the delivery fee, and the customer, all gone at once.

Where Shopify honestly wins

Selling primarily to the US, UK or Australia? Shipping handicrafts, tea or garments abroad, priced in dollars, paid by foreign cards through PayPal? Shopify's checkout polish, abandoned-cart emails and app ecosystem genuinely earn their fees there. We've told exporting clients exactly that. But if seventy percent of your buyers hold eSewa balances and Nepali debit cards, you'd be paying premium rent for a shop your customers can't pay in.

What a WebsNP WooCommerce build includes

Fixed-price quote within 24 hours, fixed delivery date, most stores live in about a week. eSewa, Khalti and COD configured and tested with real transactions. Product upload training via recorded video, so your staff can manage the catalogue themselves. Unlimited revisions during the build, 50 percent to start and 50 percent on approval, money-back guarantee, and you own everything on final payment: code, domain, hosting. One Bhaktapur clothing brand we built for went from Instagram-DM ordering to 40 automated orders a week within two months. The store paid for itself before the second season. Yours can too.
