- Dark mode looks fantastic in a portfolio screenshot.
- Whether it belongs on your business website is a different question, with a surprisingly clear answer.
Is Dark Mode Worth It for Business Websites?
Clients ask us for dark mode more every year, usually after seeing a slick developer portfolio or spending an evening in Instagram's dark theme. Fair enough, it looks sharp. But a dark mode website is a real commitment with real costs, and for most business sites the honest answer is: probably not, with some interesting exceptions. Here's the reasoning, so you can decide instead of guessing.
Why Dark Mode Website Design Became a Thing
Dark interfaces earned their popularity in specific places: code editors, video apps, chat apps, anything used for hours or at night. There, dark backgrounds reduce glare and feel easier on the eyes in dim rooms. On OLED phone screens, which most midrange Android phones now have, true black pixels also use less battery. Operating systems added a system-wide toggle, apps followed, and users started expecting the option everywhere. Expectation, though, isn't the same as benefit.
The Readability Problem Nobody Mentions
Here's the inconvenient research: for reading, dark text on a light background performs better for most people. Light-on-dark causes an effect called halation where bright text seems to glow and smear, especially for the roughly 50 percent of people with astigmatism. Your business website is mostly reading: services, prices, FAQs. A trekking itinerary or a legal services page read in daylight, which is when business sites get visited, is simply harder work in white-on-black.
There are craft problems too. Pure black backgrounds with pure white text create harsh contrast; good dark themes use dark grey (#121212 territory) with off-white text, muted brand colors, and careful shadow replacements. Your logo may need a second version. Photos that looked great on white suddenly float in a void. Dark mode isn't a filter you apply. It's a second design.
What It Actually Costs
That second design is the real price. Supporting both themes adds roughly 15 to 25 percent to design and testing time, because every component, form, chart and email capture box now has two states that both need checking, and every future change must be verified twice. On a fixed budget, that effort competes directly with things that demonstrably earn money: faster load times, better copy, a stronger enquiry flow. For a restaurant, a clinic or a manufacturing firm, we'd spend the budget there ten times out of ten.

Exceptions exist, and they follow a pattern:
- Brands that live in dark aesthetics: gaming cafes, music venues, photography and film portfolios, nightlife. Dark isn't a mode there, it's the identity, so build dark-first and skip the toggle.
- Products used in long sessions: web apps, dashboards, developer tools. If people stare at your product for hours, offer both themes and respect their system setting automatically.
- Luxury positioning: dark plus generous spacing reads premium, which is why high-end hotels and jewellery brands often go dark permanently rather than offering a switch.
There's also a sensible middle path we use often: a light site with dark sections. A dark footer, a dark testimonial band, a dark pricing block. You get the visual drama at zero maintenance cost, because there's still only one theme to maintain.
How WebsNP Decides With Clients
When a client asks for dark mode, we ask two questions. Who reads this site, and for how long? A Kathmandu dental clinic's visitors read for 90 seconds at 2pm; they get a crisp light design with dark accent sections. A SaaS dashboard's users live in it all day; they get a proper theme toggle, built and tested in both states. Either way you get a fixed-price quote within 24 hours, delivery in 2 to 7 days, and unlimited revisions on WordPress packages and above, so if we try dark and you hate it, we change it.
Dark mode is a tool, not a trend to chase. Buy it when your audience benefits. Skip it when only the screenshot does.
