- Eye-tracking studies agree on one thing: visitors scan, they do not read.
- Structure your content for that reality or lose them in seconds.
Writing for Scanners: How People Actually Read Websites
Nobody reads your website. That sounds harsh, but eye-tracking research has shown the same thing for twenty years: people scan. They bounce their eyes down the page in a rough F-shape, catch the first words of headings, and read maybe 20 to 28 percent of the text on a typical page. Good website content structure accepts this instead of fighting it.
Think about how you used Daraz last time. Did you read the product description top to bottom? Or did you jump to price, photos, ratings, delivery time? Exactly. Your visitors treat your site the same way.
The F-pattern, and what it means for you
Scanners read the first heading fully, the first line or two of the opening paragraph, then skim down the left edge catching headings and bolded phrases. Anything buried mid-paragraph in section four essentially does not exist. So the rule is brutal and simple: your most important information goes first, in headings, at the start of sentences.
Front-load everything
Journalists call it the inverted pyramid. Conclusion first, details after. Compare these two headings: "Some information about our delivery options" versus "Free delivery inside Ring Road". A scanner catches the second in a quarter of a second. The first one is fog.
Same rule inside sentences. Start with the keyword, the number, the benefit. "NPR 15,000 gets you a five-page site" beats "For those wondering about our entry-level offering, it may interest you to know that...". Nobody survives that second sentence.
Structure that survives scanning
- One idea per paragraph. Three to four lines maximum on mobile. A wall of text is a signal to leave.
- Headings every 150 to 250 words, written as information, not decoration.
- Bold the key phrase in important paragraphs, one per paragraph, or bolding means nothing.
- Lists for anything with three or more items. Like this one.
- Numbers as digits. "7 days" gets noticed, "seven days" gets skipped.

Content structure fails without design support. Line length matters: 50 to 75 characters per line is comfortable, which is why full-width text on a desktop screen feels exhausting. Font size matters: 16px minimum, 18px is better for body text. Contrast matters: light grey text on white might look elegant in a mockup and is unreadable on a cheap phone screen in sunlight outside a shop in New Road.
Spacing is the quiet hero. Generous space between sections tells the scanner where one idea ends and the next begins. Cramped pages read as untrustworthy even when the words are fine.
The mistake almost every business makes
Writing for themselves instead of the scanner. The company history paragraph first. The "welcome to our website" opener. The mission statement above the price list. A Baneshwor training institute we redesigned had their founder's message at the top of every course page. We moved fees, schedule and syllabus up, moved the message down, changed nothing else. Course enquiries went up roughly 40 percent in two months. The words were always there. People just never scrolled to them.
Test it the cheap way
You do not need eye-tracking equipment to check your own site. Try the five-second test: show your page to someone for five seconds, close it, and ask what the business offers and what it costs. If they cannot answer, a scanner cannot either. Then try the squint test: blur your eyes at the page. The things that still stand out, headings, buttons, bold phrases, are the only things a scanner reliably receives. If what stands out is a stock photo and the word "Welcome", your structure is decorating instead of communicating.
Do this on a phone, not your laptop. Over 70 percent of Nepali web traffic is mobile, and a structure that scans well on a wide screen can collapse into an unreadable column on a 6-inch display.
How WebsNP handles content structure
When we build a site, on-page structure is part of the job, not an extra: heading hierarchy, scannable sections, mobile line lengths, real information in the first screen. We will happily rework your existing text into scannable shape during the build, and with unlimited revisions on our WordPress package you can tune it until it reads right. Fixed quote in 24 hours, most sites live within a week. Write for scanners, and the few who do read every word will love you even more.
