- A video background can make a site feel alive or make it unusable on mobile data.
- Here is the maths, the cost, and our rule for when to say no.
Video Backgrounds on Websites: Costs, Payoffs, and When to Say No
Few requests come up in our Kathmandu studio as often as this one: "Can we have a video playing at the top, like the big hotel sites?" Short answer: yes, we can. Longer answer: a video background website carries real costs that nobody mentions in the inspiration galleries, and for many Nepali businesses the honest recommendation is a fast, beautiful photo instead. Here's how we decide, case by case.
What a Video Background Website Does Well
Video earns its keep when the thing you sell is motion or atmosphere. A rafting company showing whitewater. A resort showing the pool at sunset. A wedding videographer, obviously. Ten seconds of well-shot footage communicates "this is the experience" faster than any paragraph. For those businesses, a hero video can visibly lift engagement, visitors scroll further and stay 30 to 50 percent longer in what we've measured.
Notice the pattern: it works when the video IS the product. It rarely works when the video is decoration.
The Costs Nobody Mentions
- Bandwidth. Even a compressed 10-second loop runs 2 to 5MB. On NTC or Ncell 4G outside the cities, that's 5 to 15 extra seconds before the page settles. Every second past three loses you visitors.
- Mobile reality. Most phones block autoplay with sound, and many users browse on limited data packs. A big chunk of your audience gets a stuttering mess or a blank rectangle.
- Production cost. Decent footage is not free. Proper shooting and editing in Nepal runs NPR 15,000 to 80,000. Stock footage is cheaper but generic, and visitors can smell stock.
- Attention theft. Motion pulls the eye. If the video moves while your headline and button sit beside it, the video wins and your message loses. Conversion often drops even when engagement rises.
- Battery and hosting. Looping video drains phone batteries and inflates bandwidth on your hosting plan. Small costs, but they stack.

See Website Design PackagesWhen We Say No (and What We Do Instead)
We talked a Thamel restaurant out of a video header last year. Their footage was a slow pan of the dining room: pleasant, but it said nothing a photo couldn't. We used a crisp photo of their best dish, compressed to 120KB, with the menu button right on top. The page loads in under two seconds on 4G. That's the trade: their video version measured over 6MB in testing.
Our internal rule is simple. If you can pause the video on any frame and that frame works as a photo, use the photo. Video must show something a still cannot: movement, process, atmosphere unfolding.
If You Do Use Video, Do It Properly
Done right, the damage is manageable: keep the loop under 10 seconds, compress hard (aim under 2MB), strip the audio track entirely, always load a poster image first so mobile users on slow data see something instantly, and consider serving the static image to mobile and video only to desktop. Never, ever autoplay with sound. And keep text and buttons on a stable, high-contrast area, not floating over moving footage.
This is standard practice on every WebsNP build, along with the boring-but-vital stuff: NVMe hosting, free SSL, image compression, on-page SEO. Whether your site needs video, a photo, or something smarter, tell us what you're selling and we'll give you a straight recommendation plus a fixed-price quote within 24 hours. If video won't earn its megabytes, we'll be the first to say no.
