What a Snapshot Actually Is
A snapshot captures the entire state of your VPS at a specific moment, disk, memory state in some cases, configuration, everything, as a single restore point tied to that VPS on that host's infrastructure. Snapshots are fast to create and fast to restore from, which makes them genuinely useful for one specific purpose: a safety net immediately before a risky change, a major software upgrade, a big configuration edit, a version update you're not fully confident about. What a Snapshot Is Not
A snapshot is usually stored on the same underlying storage infrastructure as the live VPS itself. If that storage has a genuine hardware failure, or the entire VPS instance is lost, or your account has an issue, the snapshot can be at risk right alongside the live server it was protecting. Snapshots also aren't typically designed for long-term retention going back months, they're a short-term, pre-change safety net, not an archive.
What an Actual Backup Is
A real backup is a separate copy of your data, ideally stored on entirely different infrastructure from the live VPS, taken on a regular automated schedule, and retained for a meaningful window (7-30 days is reasonable for most businesses). This is what actually protects you against the scenarios a snapshot can't: a full server loss, a ransomware or hack scenario where an attacker could otherwise wipe both the live server and a same-infrastructure snapshot, or needing to recover something from three weeks ago, not just yesterday.

- Take a manual snapshot before any risky change โ a major update, a big configuration edit, a new deployment you're not fully confident about. Delete it once you've confirmed the change is stable, snapshots aren't meant to pile up indefinitely.
- Set up automated daily backups, stored off the live server, as your actual long-term protection. This is the layer that survives a full server loss.
- Retain backups for at least 7-14 days, longer for e-commerce stores where order and customer data matter enough to justify it.
- Actually test a restore once, in a non-production environment if possible, so you know the process works before an emergency is the first time you try it.
