Web Design Decisions That Decide Your Google Rankings

Most business owners think SEO starts after the website is finished. It doesn't. The web design decisions that affect SEO rankings are made in week one: the structure, the templates, the image handling, the menus. Get those wrong and no amount of blog writing later will dig you out. Get them right and Google does half your marketing for free.

We've rebuilt enough sites at WebsNP to see the pattern clearly. A beautiful site that ranks nowhere almost always has the same four or five design mistakes underneath. Let's walk through them.

Site structure is a design decision, and Google reads it first

Before Google reads a single sentence, it reads your architecture. A trekking company with one long homepage and a contact form gives Google one page to rank. The same company with separate pages for Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit and Langtang gives Google three specific answers to three specific searches.

The rule is simple: one service, one page. If you sell five things, you need at least five pages, each with its own URL, title and heading. This is decided at wireframe stage, not after launch.

Your navigation menu is part of this too. If a page isn't reachable within two clicks of the homepage, Google treats it as unimportant, because visitors do. We ask clients a blunt question during planning: which three searches do you most want to win? Then we make sure each of those searches has a dedicated page, sitting one click from the homepage, before anyone argues about colours. Colours don't rank. Pages do.

Speed is designed in, not optimized later

A designer who drops a 4 MB hero image and three animation libraries onto your homepage has already lost you rankings, whatever the developer does afterwards. Google measures loading speed on real phones, and in Nepal that means NTC and Ncell 4G, not office wifi. A page that takes 8 seconds on mobile data loses roughly half its visitors before it even paints.

Design for speed means: compressed WebP images, system or two-weight fonts, animation only where it earns its bytes. Hosting matters too, which is why every WebsNP build ships on our own NVMe servers rather than whatever budget shared box is cheapest that month.

Mobile layout is the layout

Google indexes the mobile version of your site. Not the desktop one. If your mobile design hides half the text behind an accordion nobody opens, or shrinks your services into a hamburger menu three taps deep, Google sees a thinner site than your desktop visitors do. For most Nepali businesses 70 to 85 percent of traffic is mobile anyway, so this is not a compromise. Design the phone view first and let desktop be the adaptation.

Text must be text

We still see it in 2026: opening hours baked into a JPEG, services listed inside a slider image, a menu card uploaded as a photo. Google cannot read text inside images. A restaurant in Jhamsikhel came to us ranking for nothing because its entire menu was six photographs. We rebuilt the menu as real HTML text and it started appearing for dish searches within weeks. Anything you want to rank for must exist as selectable text on the page.

Headings, links and buttons carry ranking weight

Small choices stack up. One H1 per page that names the service. Descriptive link text instead of "click here". Internal links from your homepage to your money pages. A footer that links every important page, not just Privacy Policy. None of these cost extra to design correctly; they only cost rankings when designed carelessly.
