Backups Before Edits: The Two-Minute Habit That Saves Websites

There are two kinds of website owners: those who take backups, and those who are about to learn why. Website backups are the least glamorous topic in this entire industry, and also the only one that can undo a disaster after it happens. Everything else, security, updates, monitoring, works by prevention. A backup works by time travel. The habit we want to sell you on today is small: before you change anything on your website, take a backup. Two minutes. Every time.

Why "before edits" specifically

Daily automatic backups are essential, and we'll get to them. But think about when websites actually break: it's rarely at 3 am on a quiet Tuesday. It's the moment someone touches something. A plugin update, a new theme, a "small" change to the checkout page right before a Dashain sale. The riskiest minute in your website's week is the minute after a human clicks something new. A backup taken right before that click means the worst possible outcome is "undo and try again". Without it, the worst outcome is a rebuild.

What counts as a real backup

Not everything called a backup deserves the name. A real one has three properties:

• Complete: both the files (theme, plugins, uploads) and the database (pages, posts, orders, users). WordPress sites are half and half; backing up only one half backs up nothing.
• Somewhere else: a backup stored only on the same server dies with the server. Good setups copy backups to separate storage automatically.
• Restorable: a backup you've never tested restoring is a hope, not a plan. Restore one to a staging site once a year and time it.

The two-minute version, in practice

On most hosting, this is genuinely fast. In cPanel, one click generates a full backup, or use the backup tool your host provides. Daily backups are the safety net under the safety net

The pre-edit backup protects you from planned changes. Daily automatic backups protect you from everything else: hacks, host failures, a colleague deleting a page without telling anyone. What matters is retention. A backup system keeping only yesterday's copy is nearly useless against hacking, because you often discover an infection a week after it happened, and by then the daily backup contains the infection too. The mistakes we keep seeing

After years of rescue jobs, the same patterns repeat:

• Backups configured once in 2022 and silently failing since 2024 because storage filled up. Check the dates on your latest backup this week.
• Backups stored in the same hosting account that got suspended for non-payment. Separate storage. Always.
• The database excluded to "save space". That's the site's entire content.
• Nobody knowing how to restore. The restore button matters more than the backup button, and the middle of an outage is a terrible classroom.
