Website Heading Structure: H1 to H6 Done Right

Here's a thing most business owners never think about: proper website heading structure is one of the cheapest SEO wins available. Headings (the H1 to H6 tags in your page's code) are how Google understands what a page is about and how its ideas relate. They're also how humans skim. Get them right and both audiences reward you.

The problem is that many designers treat headings as font sizes. "This should look big, make it an H2." That's like numbering a book's chapters based on which titles look prettiest. It confuses Google and it costs rankings you could have had for free.

What H1 to H6 actually mean

Think of your page as an outline. The H1 is the title of the whole page: one per page, naming the main topic. H2s are the major sections. H3s are subsections inside an H2. H4 to H6 exist but a normal business page rarely needs anything deeper than H3.

So a page about trekking packages might look like: H1 "Trekking Packages in Nepal", then H2s for "Everest Region Treks", "Annapurna Region Treks" and "What's Included", with H3s under each region for individual routes. Logical, skimmable, and exactly the shape Google likes.

The heading mistakes we see every week

Auditing Nepali business sites, the same faults appear constantly. Multiple H1s on one page, usually because the logo and the page title both got tagged H1 by a template. No H1 at all, because the "heading" is actually a styled paragraph or, worse, text inside an image. Skipped levels, jumping from H1 straight to H4 because H4 "looked right". And keyword-stuffed headings like "Best Cheap Affordable Web Design Company Nepal Kathmandu" that read like a ransom note.

None of these will get you penalized exactly. They just waste the clearest signal you have.

Headings and keywords: the sane approach

Your H1 should contain the page's main keyword once, naturally. Your H2s should contain related phrases people actually search, phrased as a human would say them. "How Much Does a Trekking Permit Cost?" is a great H2 because it mirrors a real search and can win a featured snippet, that answer box Google shows above the normal results. Write headings for a reader in a hurry, then check the keywords landed. That order, not the reverse.

There's a bonus audience here too: screen readers. Visually impaired users navigate by jumping from heading to heading, so a logical H1-to-H3 outline makes your site genuinely usable for them. Accessibility and SEO reward the same discipline, which is convenient.

How to check your own site in five minutes

Open any page of your site in Chrome, right-click, choose "View page source", and search for "h1". Count them: the answer should be one. Then install a free browser extension like "HeadingsMap" to see the whole outline as a tree. If the tree looks like a sensible table of contents, you're fine. If it looks like a lottery draw, your designer was choosing font sizes.

One more check: make sure the H1 text differs from page to page. Ten pages all titled "Welcome" tell Google you have ten pages about welcoming.

What WebsNP does on every build

Heading structure is part of the full on-page SEO included in every WebsNP package, not an extra. That's usually how SEO works.
