Website Typography: A Font Pairing Guide for Business Sites

Around 95 percent of your website is text. Not images, not animation, text. Which means website typography quietly decides whether people read your offer or bounce. The good news: you don't need a design degree. You need two fonts, a clear hierarchy, and a handful of readability numbers. This guide covers all three, plus the pairings we reach for at WebsNP again and again.

The Two-Font Rule in Website Typography

One font for headings, one for body text. That's it. A third is occasionally justified for code or a logo, but three fonts on a normal business site almost always reads as messy. Why two works: contrast between headings and body creates structure, while consistency within each role creates calm. Five fonts create neither. They create a school notice board.

Contrast is the key word. Pair fonts that are clearly different, a bold geometric heading against a neutral body, rather than two fonts so similar visitors sense something is off without knowing what.

Pairings You Can Steal Today

  • Modern and safe: Poppins or Montserrat for headings, Inter or Open Sans for body. Works for 70 percent of business sites.
  • Editorial and premium: Playfair Display headings, Source Sans body. Hotels, boutiques, law firms.
  • Friendly and local: Nunito headings, Roboto body. Schools, clinics, NGOs.
  • Nepali content: Mukta or Noto Sans Devanagari. Test these early; a Latin font that looks great will fall back to an ugly default the moment Devanagari appears.

All of these are free on Google Fonts, so licensing costs you nothing.

Hierarchy: Make the Page Skimmable

Nobody reads a business website top to bottom. People skim, then commit. Hierarchy is what makes skimming work: one H1 that states the offer, H2 section headings a visitor can navigate by, body text that rewards the ones who slow down. Size alone isn't hierarchy. Combine size, weight and spacing. A 20px bold heading with generous space above it beats a 28px heading crammed against the previous paragraph.

The Readability Numbers That Matter

These are the defaults we apply on every WebsNP build, and the reasoning behind them:

  • Body text at 16px minimum, 18px if your audience skews older. Anything smaller triggers pinch-zooming on phones, and most Nepali traffic is mobile on NTC or Ncell data.
  • Line length of 45 to 75 characters. Longer lines make eyes lose their place on the return trip. This is why full-width paragraphs on desktop feel exhausting.
  • Line height around 1.5 to 1.6 for body text. Tighter feels cramped; looser falls apart.
  • Real contrast: dark grey like #222 on white, never #999 on white.

One performance note: every font weight is a separate file. Loading eight weights of Poppins can add 400KB, which hurts on 4G. Load only regular, semibold and bold. Nobody will miss the rest.

How WebsNP Handles Typography on Client Projects

A Lalitpur accounting firm came to us with a site their nephew had built using four fonts, including one that resembled handwriting. Enquiries were near zero. We rebuilt it with exactly two fonts, a proper hierarchy and 18px body text. Same content, same services, and calls started coming within weeks. Typography wasn't the whole story, but it was the biggest visible change.

Every WebsNP package includes this typographic setup as standard: tested pairings, correct sizes, Devanagari support where needed, and fonts loaded for speed on our NVMe hosting. You get a fixed-price quote within 24 hours and a finished site in 2 to 7 days. Text is your salesman. Dress it properly.
