WHM Tutorial: The First 10 Things to Do After Buying Reseller Hosting
WHM greets every new reseller the same way: with a sidebar of two hundred options and no hint about which ones matter. After onboarding hundreds of resellers, we can tell you that day one comes down to ten tasks, done in this order.
1. Log in and change your password
Your welcome email contains the WHM URL (usually yourserver:2087), username and password. Log in, then set a long unique password immediately. Your WHM login controls every client site you will ever host; treat it like the master key it is.
2. Set up your private nameservers
ns1.yourbrand.com and ns2.yourbrand.com make you look like a hosting company instead of someone renting space. Register the glue records at your domain registrar with the IPs from your welcome mail, then set the names in WHM under Basic WebHost Manager Setup. Clients will point domains at YOUR brand, which also makes switching upstream providers later invisible to them.
3. Create your hosting packages before your first client
In WHM, Add a Package defines what a plan includes: disk, bandwidth, email accounts, databases, subdomains. Create three tiers now (small, medium, large), because packages applied at account creation keep clients consistent. Guessing limits per client one at a time creates a mess you will untangle for years.
4. Turn on AutoSSL
Under SSL/TLS, make sure AutoSSL is enabled for your accounts. Every client site gets a free certificate automatically, renewed forever. There is no faster way to look professional than HTTPS working on day one without anyone asking.
5. Check the backup situation
Ask your provider what is backed up, how often, and how you restore a single account. Then decide what YOU offer clients. The difference between "we restore your site in 20 minutes" and "let me email my provider" is the difference between keeping and losing a client after their first disaster.
6. Brand your cPanel
WHM lets you replace logos and links in your clients' cPanel. Ten minutes of branding means every client login reinforces your business, not a generic panel.
7. Set your contact email and notifications
WHM sends warnings about full disks, failed backups and suspended accounts. Point them at an inbox you actually read, because every one of those emails is a client phone call you can prevent.
8. Create a test account
Make a cPanel account with one of your packages, install WordPress on it, send an email from it. You just experienced exactly what your clients will. Fix anything that annoyed you before a paying customer feels it.
9. Learn the suspend and terminate difference
Suspend freezes an account (unpaid invoice, compromised site) and is instantly reversible. Terminate deletes it. Learn where both live before you need them at midnight, and never terminate what you meant to suspend.
10. Document your defaults
Write down your packages, nameservers, and standard answers to "where do I log in" and "how do I set up email on my phone." That document becomes your onboarding email, and clients who receive it open half as many tickets.

Service configuration, PHP handlers, and anything under Server Configuration belongs to your upstream provider on a reseller plan. If a client needs a PHP module or a setting changed, open a ticket with your provider; that is what their support exists for. Your job is accounts, packages and clients. Master those ten items and you are ahead of most resellers operating today.
