Canva in Nepal: Nepali Fonts, Festival Posts and Printing

Updated 15 Oct 2026 ยท 7 min read ยท WebsNP team

Canva works well for Nepali designs, but three local issues catch people out: Devanagari fonts, the festival calendar and the size and file requirements of local print shops. Test each early and your campaigns will go out smoothly. Font lists and features are decided by Canva and change, so check them in the editor before a big project.

Writing Nepali text properly

Type a headline in Nepali and look closely at the conjunct characters, vowel signs and half letters. Some fonts display them well and others break them or leave empty boxes. Test with a sentence that includes difficult letters, not just a short word. If the font you want is not available, check whether your plan lets you upload your own and whether you have the licence for that font. Many free Nepali fonts have personal-use terms only.

  • Test in the exact size you will use.
  • Look at the design on a phone, not just a laptop.
  • Avoid long Nepali paragraphs on images; use a short headline and put details in the caption.
  • When mixing Nepali and English, keep the two fonts visually balanced.

Dates and calendars

Nepali audiences read dates in Bikram Sambat. Decide whether your design shows BS, AD or both, and double check every date. A wrong date on an offer post or event poster is the most common and most costly typing mistake. The fiscal year begins in Shrawan, so business greetings and reports often follow that rhythm too.

Planning around the festival year

SeasonTypical content
Baisakh and new yearNew year greeting, anniversary offers
Teej and Janai PurnimaGreeting posts, women focused offers
Dashain and TiharHeavy offer period, countdown posts, delivery cut-offs
Admission seasonSchool and college notices, scholarship posts
Winter and wedding seasonEvent services, catering, clothing

Build the Dashain and Tihar templates a month early. These weeks are busy and you will not want to design from scratch.

Designing for local print

For flex banners, flyers, visiting cards or menus, speak to the press before you start. Ask for the exact finished size, whether they want bleed, the file type and the resolution they need. Print also looks different from a screen, so colours may change. Ask for a small proof for important jobs. Canva can export print-ready PDFs on suitable settings, but the press decides what it accepts.

Commercial use and licences

Templates, photos, videos and music in Canva come with licence terms set by Canva and its contributors. They usually cover normal marketing use, but there are limits such as resale of a design as is, logos and trademarks. Never use a celebrity photo, a film still or a famous Nepali song in an advert without the right to do so. If your business depends on this, read the licence page or ask Canva support.

Paying for the Pro plan

If you need the Pro tools and your bank card is not enabled for foreign payments, WebsNP helps buyers arrange a Canva subscription without an international card. We are not an official Canva partner, and the vendor decides plan features. Read the Canva Pro Nepal page for how ordering works. Ask your bank about foreign payment rules if you prefer to pay yourself.

A quick pre-print checklist

  1. Spelling, phone number, dates and prices are checked by a second person.
  2. Size and bleed agreed with the press.
  3. Fonts display correctly in the exported file.
  4. A small test print or on-screen proof is approved.
  5. Source design is saved so you can edit it next year.

Common print mistakes to avoid

  • Low-resolution images. A photo that looks fine on a phone can be blurry on a large flex banner.
  • Text too close to the edge. Trimming can cut it off. Keep key text inside a safe margin.
  • Colour surprises. Screens are bright and printers are not, so dark blues and strong reds can shift.
  • Last-minute orders. Presses are busiest before Dashain and Tihar. Book early and leave time for a proof.
  • Unchecked translations. If a design carries both Nepali and English, make sure both say the same thing.

Organising files for the next year

Many festival designs repeat every year with small changes. Save each campaign in a folder named with the festival and the Bikram Sambat year. Keep the editable Canva design, the final PDF and a note of the press and size used. Next year you will start from a finished layout instead of from memory, which saves hours in the busiest weeks.

Using Canva for school and office documents

Schools and offices use Canva for certificates, notices, ID card layouts and report covers. For certificates, keep a master design with the name and date fields clearly marked, and use a consistent order when preparing many copies so that mistakes are easy to spot. For official notices, check wording and dates with the person responsible before printing. Remember that Canva is a design tool, so it does not replace the record systems schools and offices need to keep.
