G Suite in Nepal: what it became, what it costs and how to buy it now

The names, in order

Four names, one product line, twenty years. Knowing which name belongs to which era makes older tutorials and older invoices much easier to read.

1. Google Apps for Your Domain (2006) The original: Gmail, Calendar and Talk on a company's own domain instead of a public address.
2. Google Apps for Business, later Google Apps for Work The paid business tier as it was sold through the early 2010s. Documents from this era talk about "Google Apps admin console".
3. G Suite (29 September 2016) Google announced the rename in a blog post titled "All together now: introducing G Suite". Editions were G Suite Basic, G Suite Business and G Suite Enterprise.
4. Google Workspace (6 October 2020) The current name, announced as a rebuild around Gmail, Chat, Meet, Docs and Drive working as one. Editions became Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus and the Enterprise range.

What happened to each old edition

The mapping below is a rough guide to where the old editions sit today. The names line up in spirit rather than feature for feature, and Google has moved capabilities around several times since 2020, so treat the right-hand column as a starting point and check the detail on each plan page.

Google is explicit that you can no longer sign up for G Suite Basic, G Suite Business or the legacy free edition. Existing G Suite subscriptions continue to run, but an account on one of them cannot switch to another G Suite edition. In practice, any new order in Nepal today is a Google Workspace order.

The legacy free edition and what happened to it

Plenty of Nepali companies set up domain email in the era when Google gave a small number of free accounts on your own domain. That tier is the "legacy free edition", and its status is the single most common question we get on this topic.

• New sign-ups closed years ago. There is no route back into it.
• In 2022 Google moved accounts using the legacy free edition for business purposes onto paid Google Workspace subscriptions.
• The free edition remains only for personal, non-commercial use. A company running its invoicing and client mail on it is not the intended use.
• From 1 May 2025 those accounts moved to pooled storage, the same storage model the paid editions use.

So what is the "G Suite price in Nepal" today?

It is the Google Workspace price, quoted per user per month. Google publishes list prices in US dollars: on the annual, fixed-term plan Business Starter is $7 per user per month, Business Standard $14 and Business Plus $22. On the flexible monthly plan the same editions are $8.40, $16.80 and $26.40.

Google does not bill in Nepali rupees. Nepal falls under Google's "Other: US dollars or euros, credit or debit card" category, and you cannot change your billing country later. Google itself says to contact a local reseller where a local payment method is not offered.

One thing worth knowing before you compare quotes: since 16 January 2025 Gemini AI features are included in the Business and Enterprise plans rather than sold as a separate "Gemini for Workspace" add-on. Google's own example was Business Standard plus the Gemini add-on at $32 becoming $14 with Gemini included. Older G Suite era price comparisons predate all of that.

If you already have an old account

There are two situations, and they need different handling.

You pay Google for a G Suite subscription

It keeps working. What you cannot do is hop between G Suite editions. If you want the current feature set, the move is onto a Workspace Business edition, and if you want to pay in rupees rather than by international card, the subscription can be transferred to a reseller. After a transfer the reseller bills you instead of Google and can help with account, access, domain settings and billing. Transfers do not affect your data, they are limited to two per calendar year and they are not reversible, so decide once.

You are on a legacy free account, or on some other host entirely

This is a migration rather than a billing change: new users get created on the paid subscription, historical mail gets imported, then MX records point at Google. Which word should you actually use?

Use Google Workspace when you talk to Google support, when you search the admin help and when you buy. Use G Suite only to describe history or to find your old paperwork. Inside your own organisation the label matters less than the edition name, because that is what determines storage, Meet limits, Vault and which Gemini features your staff see.
